Bookcase lighting in a small living room works well when it puts the books or display in view without adding another lamp base beside the sofa. Start with the shelves you want to light, then check the complete power setup before buying. A cabinet lamp can look ready to use while still needing a separate driver and power cord.

Put bookcase light on the display you want to see
Choose the part of the bookcase that deserves attention before choosing the fixture. A row of book spines, a framed photograph, and a glass-front display offer different places for light to land. I’d start with the view from the sofa: which part of the cabinet would you actually enjoy seeing after dark?
Top-mounted cabinet lamps are worth considering when you want a visible fixture above the furniture. In the example below, black lamps sit above adjacent bookcases, leaving the floor beside the armchair free of extra lamp bases. The photograph shows the arrangement; it doesn’t establish that every shelf receives equal light.

For a less visible fixture, look at lighting designed to fit within the furniture. IKEA’s cabinet-lighting guide distinguishes focused cabinet lights from integrated lighting and shelf strips. That gives you a useful choice: do you want to notice the lamp above the bookcase, or mainly the illuminated display?
Keep the display’s job clear. Bookcase lighting adds an accent to the room; the reading seat may still need its own light. Our cozy living room lighting guide explains how to give accent, task, and general light separate jobs before adding more fixtures.
Match the cabinet lamp to its driver and power cord
Once the lighting position makes sense, check the parts needed to power that particular fixture. A driver is a separate power component used by some LED lighting systems. A product photograph showing a lamp on a bookcase doesn’t tell you which accessories are included.
For a concrete example, IKEA lists the black TVÄRDRAG cabinet light with a TRÅDFRI LED driver and ANSLUTA power cord, sold separately. The same product page says its lamp head can be angled inward toward cabinet contents. Those details apply to that lamp; another shelf light may use a different supply or have its own plug.
Use the product’s completion list to keep the shopping parts together:
| Part | Question to settle before ordering |
|---|---|
| Cabinet lamp | Is the fixture intended for the mounting position and furniture surface? |
| LED driver | Does the lamp maker specify this exact driver for the chosen lights? |
| Power cord | Is the cord included, or named as a separate required part? |
| Control | Does the proposed combination support the on/off or dimming function you want? |
The gray driver below makes the extra component easier to recognize. Its photograph shows cables at one end, but the image alone can’t establish a load limit or a compatible lamp count.

Read the exact driver’s connection and load limits before combining lights. The number of empty sockets isn’t a complete compatibility check, and a capacity stated for one driver shouldn’t be carried over to another model.
Choose bookcase controls with the driver
With the power parts identified, decide how you want to operate the cabinet from your seat. Simple switching and dimming are different requirements, so look for the function you want in the specified combination.
For TVÄRDRAG, IKEA distinguishes an ANSLUTA driver setup for on/off use from a TRÅDFRI driver with a compatible remote for dimming. Its product information also lists controls separately. Check the current lamp and driver pages together before adding a remote; a remote in a styled photograph isn’t an included accessory list.
I’d favor a control you can reach during an ordinary evening over an extra feature you won’t use. If the bookcase is behind the sofa, think through where the switch or remote will live before filling the shelves again.
Check the cabinet, outlet, and sofa view together
The complete parts list still needs to fit the room. Before committing to a mounting position, compare the fixture’s instructions with the cabinet surface, available space, and any doors that open beneath it. For TVÄRDRAG, IKEA describes screw mounting and limits its adhesive-tape option to glass and metal surfaces. Don’t extend that option to a painted wood bookcase just because tape comes in the package.
Plan where the specified driver will sit and how the supplied cords will reach the outlet, following the product instructions. A hidden outlet is useful only if you can still reach the connection when needed. For a rental, settle permission for any permanent fixing before ordering the light.
Finally, judge the lit cabinet from the sofa with the rest of your evening lights on. Notice whether the display draws your attention comfortably, whether glass reflects a bright source, and whether the lamp head itself catches your eye. Adjust an adjustable head within its intended range and check the view again. The useful result is a display you enjoy seeing from your seat, with the power parts accounted for behind it.
